QBO will invent an opening balance on the DL

// the more you owe · the "thanks for the assist, QBO" edition

The More You Owe

You get a new set of books, open it up, and there are seven credit card accounts. Or are there? Sometimes sub-cards get connected to QBO as separate accounts. Seven credit cards, ONE statement, endless hours of fun. Sad trombone.

QBO LOVES to be helpful. So it helpfully created a Credit Card Credit with the memo Opening Balance from Bank, offset to Opening Balance Equity, for the exact negative of that card's first month of charges. Seven times.

Net effect: charges come in on the feed and get credited right back out. Register reads zero. Everything looks cool. Thanks for the assist, QBO!

I only noticed because something seemed too clean. One card sat at exactly $0.00 while the bank had billed that cardholder $72.93 that cycle. The charges were there. The offsetting credit was there too. It didn't look like an error. It looked like a card nobody used.

Stupidity to avoid

Any time you connect a new card account, search the memo field for Opening Balance from Bank. That's QBO's fingerprint. Find it, kill it.

The dumb thing this prevents: reconciling a card to zero and believing it — or spending two hours hunting a balance-sheet "break" that turns out to be seven fabricated entries and cutoff timing.
